Could i use linux for light gaming on old computers?

They use mainly XP, but some vista, and maybe a 7, but all windows. Some of them can run the games, and there are ways of playing them on linux (wine), so i see no problem with switching, and i am at least mildly compitent with computers. Any thought to convince/deter me, or any ideas on a specific os (ubuntu, mint...)

There is out there a thing called Tiny XP which is XP minus everything you don't need for most games. How to install msn instant messenger onto ubuntu?
Q. I just recently got ubuntu and i am having problems installing and downloading files, Does anyone have any clue how to download MSN messenger on ubuntu? When i try the regular way it says i dont have the right stuff to do it, i have hear about doing it using linux wine. but i dont know how to do that, helP!!!!

A. Hey there!

The problem is, Windows Live Messenger doesn't work proporly in Wine yet, So you have two options.

1) Use Pidgin, It's MSN and it comes with Ubuntu! To get to it go to Applications, Internet, Pidgin Instant Messenger and follow the instructions

2) You can get aMSN, It's more MSN Like and supports Webcam. You can install it by Clicking Applications, Accessories, Terminal and copying and pasting the following in:

gksu apt-get install amsn

Then pressing enter. When you are back at the command line (After all the text has finished flashing up), Close your terminal and go to Applications, Internet, aMSN.

Hope I helped! Ubuntu 4eva!

How to put 2moons onto linux ubuntu?

Q. I have a question, i tried to install 2moons onto linux with wine, everything worked untill the end, nothing installed. Is there some other software or a way i have to run it through terminal to make it work?

A. if at all there was any possibility through wine, crossover would have done it. But looks like it doesn't work with crossover (http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?forum=1;app_id=3562;mhl=28643;msg=28625)

So u can try running it in a windows inside Virtualbox. But directX may not work that great.

Q. I have Linux Mint 7 Gloria, and I tested a malicious script (fork bomb) to see if it would adversely effect the computer, and it did crash. Could other malicious scrips meant to harm Windows harm Linux in Wine? If so, should I consider installing virus protection in Wine?

A. The way Wine works, it create a software version of Windows within Linux. A Windows virus might be able to run without that environment (assuming the files it attacks are being simulated in Wine). However as soon as you stop Wine, you would kill the virus. When you reload Wine the virus would not longer be working. (Assuming you are not running Wine as Root).

A. as far as i know wine is what u use for installing software not drivers. you should use ndiswrapper or make sure you're using a distro with the latest stable kernel release... linux seems to be getting better all the time with oob wireless support, you just need to stay updated.
try sabayon 3.5 with kde, very easy to use gentoo based distro with everything installed (including wine and ndiswrapper) and hopefully it will recognize your card with no hassle...

A. To use Linux within Windows I would recommend installing VirtualBox http://www.virtualbox.org/ it creates a virtual machine within your PC. Its a great piece of software being versatile and easy to use. I work with it all the time for testing various Linux distros.

A. as far as i know wine is what u use for installing software not drivers. you should use ndiswrapper or make sure you're using a distro with the latest stable kernel release... linux seems to be getting better all the time with oob wireless support, you just need to stay updated.
try sabayon 3.5 with kde, very easy to use gentoo based distro with everything installed (including wine and ndiswrapper) and hopefully it will recognize your card with no hassle...

Q. I just got ubuntu and i am having problems downloading programs onto my computer. Does anyone know how to download MSN messenger onto ubuntu? i have heard about using linux wine to do it but i dont know how to do that. please help!!! (be specific with answers if u can)

How do I use Wine to play/install Windows games on Linux?
Q. I am having a difficult time in trying to figure this out. I really want to play some of my Windows games on Linux. I know there are some ways to do it, I just don't know what they are or how to do it. How do I play/install Windows games on Linux using Wine? Are there easier, less complicated methods to do this?

A. option 1: dual boot windows and Linux
option 2: use wine. you can probably find a tutorial on how to use wine. just search how to use wine on Linux. However not all games are compatible with wine so you'll have to Google specific games to see their compatibility. for example if you want to play Splinter cell 3 on Linux with wine you could Google "is splinter cell 3 compatible with wine" or "splinter cell 3 on Linux"

How do I run Steam games on Linux?
Q. I got Steam to work on Linux using Wine. All my games worked just fine for a while, but all of the sudden none of them will run (except Portal for some reason). When i try to open them it says, "Preparing to launch," then does nothing. Does anyone know what the problem is, or how to fix it?

A. You could use a program like WINE (Windows Emulator) to get it going. Or you can try a virtual machine but sometimes that wont load drivers and you still wont be able to play. The best option will be a dual boot of windows and linux. The reason being, that for the sake of stability, for the drivers to work, and for you to get a good performance it is just easier to play on Windows (since all PC games are generally designed for Windows environments).

Can Windows viruses run in a Linux OS through Wine?
