Q. I want to know what you need to run a web server or website off of a computer and how to set one up. I don't wnat anything extreme just a basic web or website (I don't know proper terminology) server.
A. Any computer, add more hard drives for space,
server software, and max out the RAM that the motherboard will support!
If you talk performance, it is still the same things just more of it.
Better server = larger case that supports over eight hard drives, motherboard that supports dual/quad/2 or 4 CPUs. Redundant power supply. Cooling fans to keep inside of case cool.
Your software: Operating System = Server Software, Web creation software, application software, router, two network cards, Back up server - so, where do you want to go, it is up to your pocket book.

Does anyone know of a free version of Dragon Naturally or other good, free speech recognition software?
Q. Please help.
Trying to help a brain injured person get legal help, who needs to transcribe a lot of information. Speech recognition software is essential, but I don't have any to lend.
If you know of a good free program, please let me know as well as a good site to download from.
Windows or Linux is fine, just please let me know which.
Thanks.

A. If you have access to a computer that runs either Vista or Windows 7 you are in luck. Both operating systems have speech recognition programs built right in to them. In my experience, these programs can do virtually anything that Dragon Naturally Speaking does and even do some things more easily than the Dragon Software.The speech recognition software in Windows takes a hour or less to set up and train for basic use.and has an interactive tutorial to teach the fundamentals of proper dictation and simple commands. A comprehensive list of all the available commands in the program's help menu. All you need to get is a headset microphone which should be available through any electronics store or website
Does anyone know of any online tutorials or documentation where I could learn the basic Linux fundamentals?
Q. I have found several tutorials and beginner documents, but I am just curious if some of you long-time users knew of any really great sites or tutorials that I could reference. Thanks!
A. go to www.isohunt.com and do a torrent search for "Linux"...that should keep you busy for a few years:-) There are 2 basic categories of materials: 1) system administration/user stuff 2) programming/networking. Right now you are probably learning about Linux itself and not about programming, so something like "The Linux Bible" etc would be fine. For tutorials I suggest that when you are having a problem or want to know how to do a specific thing...then go research THAT and learn all about it..don't be random. For instance if you want to figure out how to open up a Gnome terminal in a tabbed format and connect to a different remote host in each tab...you can learn that. But if you don't NEED to do that, then don't bother. BTW the command for that is:
$ gnome-terminal --tab-with-profile=green --geometry 75x60+150+150 -e 'ssh rt1' --title 'RT1' --tab-with-profile=green --title 'RT2' -e 'ssh rt2'
(my color scheme is named "green" and consists of green text on black background, with an alternate font). The 'green' profile was created in Gnome terminal and then saved. 'rt1' and 'rt2' are hostnames to be looked up in the /etc/hosts file and are two remote cisco routers that I can log into quickly...this commandline line is saved as a shell script and then set up to run from the Gnome toolbar. Linux is a wonderful thing. You DO know that the current Mars Rovers and Mars Landers all run Linux, right?
If you want a *structured* way to learn, you might consider using the Linux+ course-ware (free on bit torrent) and then when you have learned your stuff you can take the exam to prove it:-) That's what I'd do, but then again I'm a geek.
