How do I run a web browser from linux command line?

Q. I an VERY new to linux. I have installed Fedora 5 in text mode. I have a Linux book and am trying to slowly learn linux. So from the console, or command line, how do I run a web browser. Also how do I run the X Windows System?

A. If you installed in text mode, maybe you didn't install X. You probably have a text mode browser. Try lynx or elinks. If the startx command doesn't work, try "yum install x-window-system". By the way, Fedora 5 is old. The current version of Fedora is 9.

Benefits of running a linux Operating system?
Q. What're the benefits of running a linux system compared to Mac or Microsoft? I know it's very uncompatiable with many programs, but what're the benefits of using it?

A. It actually is compatible with many programs. What you mean is that it's uncompatible with commercial programs. But Linux can use many FREE programs not available for Windows or Mac.

Linux is easy to use. Read the Linux Mint (a popular version of Linux) User Guide: http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/linuxmint.com/stable/5/user-guide/EN-v1.pdf

Linux can be customized. Windows and Mac can't. I could make Linux look like XP, Vista, Mac, or have a unique look.

Linux can use lots of free software. Check out the Linux Mint Software Portal (this is just some of what you can get!): http://www.linuxmint.com/software/?sec=categories&release=3

Linux is more secure, can run lots of Windows programs with a free program called Wine, and doesn't get viruses.

What are the pros and cons of switching TO Linux FROM Windows?
Q. For someone who's good with computers and uses a new-ish personal desktop for several hours a day, mostly on the Internet.
By "Linux" I mean whatever version is easiest for a newcomer to it and by "Windows" I mean Windows 7.
Switching and adjusting isn't an issue, I'm mainly referring to the pros and cons of the general operating systems themselves.
Thanks in advance.

A. Easiest Linux is Ubuntu, in my opinion. Software is made available very simply.

I tried to do what you propose, and found Linux too limited. It wasn't the OS, but all the channels I knew were to deliver Windows content. So I gave up too easily. I dual boot, and use Linux to repair whatever Windows infections I or neighbors get.

Linux is less prone to virus, at least until more people move onto it.

[EDIT:

Sorry, forgot cons...
- cannot (yet) buy software for Linux in local stores,
- cannot play your favorite Windows games without an emulator (which may require you to do a lot of tweaking),
- Linux is a console-based OS, with a windowed wrapper, so when you are tweaking, you will likely be doing this at a console,
- your office apps are usually not available, which requires retraining,
- cooperating between Windows (your clients) and Linux can be a bit taxing.

Is there a linux distro that will run most windows programs?

Q. I really like linux except for most of the programs i use won't work on it. Is there a linux version that will run Yahoo messenger 10, Itunes 9, Frostwire and google chrome? I really don't like pidgin because of the way i use messenger. I have had very little luck with wine.

A. In most cases there is a Linux version or an open source alternative

I have Ubuntu Linux version 9.04 installed in one partition of my laptop. There's a newer better version that has just been released (10.04) And I want to install it, but at the same time replace the old one completely with the new installation.

what does the gnu require software developers to do when modifying linux version?

Q. What does the GNU General Public License require software developers to do when modifying Linux version?
distribute? Huh? I'm an idiot when it comes to this stuff can someone elaborate for me please... I have a 6 page paper and 4 midterms to study for. Help me out pa pa pa please!

A. The GNU License only requires that you license your modified work under the same GNU license. This is known as attribution. Beyond that you have no other legal obligations. As for distributing your work, I have two suggestions for you.
1. Google Code ( http://code.google.com )
2. Source Forge ( http://www.sourceforge.net )
Both are great for getting your project out there.

Looking For a Good Free Linux version for kids, that can run without a hard drive?
Q. My niece other uncle(on her father side) gave her old computer, it doesn't run. But thats not the reason I ask, I have a smaller old internet computer, that I feel will be better for her(as I am her mother's bother, and it has a less energy drain then the old Dell has). My niece is only five years old, and all she needs it for is playing games, and doing pre-school work or something.

The linux version should run from a CD, so it must be a small installation, it also should be kid friendly.
ubuntu I would like, as it is nice, and it has the look and feel of windows, but its to large for a cd, maybe several cds, or a Live DVD, but not a cd. The computer had a linux based cd, but it got loss down the line, and it was old, so anything that will run on a CD, that easy to install first off, because i tried to use Damn Small, but I didn't understand the installation process
Thank you basilb101, for clearifing, I thought Mr. Micro was misspelling ubuntu

A. I like the suggestion of Edubuntu but it is a big download/install and liveCD will slow the computer down, i would suggest an install of edubuntu or puppy linux (under 150MB), maybe you could splash out on a IDE compact flash card?
Puppy linux is never truly installed it just moves files from the disk/flash drive to the ram it needs 128MB (i think!) or else a hdd for virtual memory
EDIT; ubuntu/kubuntu/edubuntu/xubuntu are all availabl on a single dvd which would be alot faster than a 700MB download but i don't think edubuntu is available on CD

What would it take to make you change from Windows to Linux?
Q. Personally I would switch tomorrow if all of the software I used was compatible with Linux.

I hope that with the average person coming out of school being more computer savy these days we will see more and more software developers releasing Linux versions.
I have tried Linux in the past and wasn't very fond of it, at that time I was not aware of all the different types available such as Red Hat and Ubuntu. There are versions out there easy to get to grips with and similar to Windows.

A. A direct port of Microsoft Office not a watered down version like they made for Mac. I have tried open office I don't like it.

More automation, I would like to be abe to double click an install file and have it install - I hate hate HATE using the Linux command terminal it is like pulling teeth.

A better IM client I think kMess and GAIM are crap - and a better music player I don't like amarok and WinAmp style media players I just don't like them and I won't 'get used to them over time'.

Did I mention how much I hate using the terminal?

Better games, Linux supports OpenGL and has tonnes of C++ compilers etc, there really is no excuse for not having better games.

Faster boot times, every version of Linux I have tried took ages to boot and my PC isn't exactly low spec, its got a Core 2 Duo @ 1.83ghz with 2 gigs of RAM it shouldn't take so long to boot.

And finally I really like to nosey around and change things when I muck up Windows its easy to restore, Linux isn't I want better recovery options for when theings do go wong because the always do.

I don't ask for much really.

100 MB memory
pentium II

It's been a while but either Mepis or PCLinuxOS is good with small dmachines. I forget which. Linux Mint is supposed to be and I've seen some roll-your-own fubuntus which were out on CD. Xubuntu has actually gotten pretty big and feature laden.

what does the gnu require software developers to do when modifying linux version?

How can I install and replace the new Ubuntu Linux?

Q. Hello everyone !
I have Ubuntu Linux version 9.04 installed in one partition of my laptop. There's a newer better version that has just been released (10.04) And I want to install it, but at the same time replace the old one completely with the new installation.
What is the best way to do this ? The way that it's less error-prone, or the easiest way.

Note. I have Windows installed as well and I use GRUB for dual booting.

A. Ubuntu 10.04 at present is unstable

For the time being I would suggest staying with Ubuntu 9.04 or perhaps an upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10 both of which are fine releases
