Is there any way to format a hard drive with Linux file system under windows?

Q. I need to be able to format my drive with linux file system in order for it to work in the western digital NAS enclosure. Thanks.

A. Steven's right, but you'll need some extra software to put files on or even view the partition from Windows. There are a few options, the best probably being:

EXT2IFS - top link

EXT2FSD - bottom link

what is your insight about Linux file system?
Q. what can you say about linux file system compared to windows'?

A. You should say Linux Filesystem because there isn't a official one
The most common filesystems are ext2 (older), reiserfs(old), ext3(latest)
If you are refering to the directory structure the way Linux stores files then you can compare them
In Windows the root directory is C:\
In UNIX/Linux the root directory is \
In Windows the storage component are devices and accessible to a directory structure
In UNIX to open storage device you have to mount them to a destination before opening them
In terms of fragmentation it is lower because ext3 does not write to disk immediately but throws the data into journal back up
Then calculate the most optimal allocation before writing to final destination

How to reconize linux file systems on windows?
Q. I have both linux and windows working perfectly, but i'm not able to use the partition created for linux in windows. Linux has no problems in recognizing windows file systems. So please find me a way.

A. generally windows doesn't support linux file system( ext2,ext3 ), but you may be able access using some software like "ext2fs". you can download it from the given link "http://www.fs-driver.org/download.html"

How do I get itunes on Linux using Wine? I've looked it up but all the tutorials are so confusing...?

Q. Use as much description for a dummy like me, please and thank you.

A. While it's possible to make it install and run under Wine, it's still very, VERY buggy that way. For example, it will crash if you try to go to the iTunes store. Here's an article about alternatives (one of which is to run iTunes in a virtual machine):

http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-software-for-itunes-ipod-classic-ipod-touch-iphone/

im thinking of getting rid of windows xp and having linux operating system, but how do i do that?
Q. the reason y i want to get rid of mswindows xp is because it takes up alot of hard disk space and ram, i have only 128 mb of ram. do u think i shud get linux? if i do, i wont be able 2 have microsoft applications like windows media player and microsoft office etc.., what shud i do? get linux or stay with microsoft office?

A. Linux is great, but it's also very different from Windows.
Switching to Linux may prove a huge challenge if you're not good with computers.
Indeed you will not have Windows Media Player or Office under Linux, but good, free applications are available for Linux that replace WMP or Office rather conveniently.
If you want to give it a try, I would suggest picking up a book about Linux for newcomers (e.g. "Linux for Dummies") before doing anything else.

How do you install drivers for your hardware on Linux?
Q. I have Gentoo and I love it except I can't connect to the internet. I have a Dell laptop 100L Latitude (hey! It was practically free). I am feeling rather slow so a really good website would be really helpful (Like "Installing drivers on Gentoo for Dummies" sort of thing) Or if it isn't as hard as it feels like right now and you can just explain it- that would be good too. :-D

A. It might be in your best interest to an easier distro to start off with gentoo is great but not for beginners.
as far as the net not working could be a network connection not set I have had this a few times on some distros. Any ubuntu based distro is a much better choice for a newbie I hope your time with linux is good but it might be less then you hope for with gentoo this early in the game.

How to install linux fedora on a i586 system?

Q. How do I install linux fedora onto an i586 system? I tried the installation guide page, and the live cd mode is not compatible....and to do a classical install for this kernel, but my question is: WHAT is a classical install? Thanks!

10 points for best answer!

A. Don't use the live CD method. Burn the cd set from one of the spins or use the network cd method.
You will need to find a server with the distribution tree for the release you chose.

Try the fedora forums for help first.

What is the easiest way to setup your own Linux / Unix Web Server?
Q. Want to learn Unix as much as possible, I figured setting up a web server would be the easiest project to start off with. Can someone reccomend an easy way to go about doing this for a newbie?

A. download and burn .iso images for either ubuntu or fedora. if you're a beginner, don't use ubuntu server edition because it is all command line and there is no graphical window interface. then you want to install and run a web server after you get the linux OS installed, such as apache. i've discovered that help and tutorials are easy to find once you know what the applications' names are, such as
apache=web server
mysql=database

you should be able to google your answers from there.

What are the basic steps to configure IPTables with Fedora Core 5?
Q. I want to use open-source operating system for the first time. Currently, I used to install fedora core 5 on my server, the problem is I don't know how to share my internet connection. And I tried to visit some online forums but I was not satisfied with there given answer. They just recommended to configure iptables but there is no information in a way how to do it. Please help me..Thank you very much!

A. Sorry, i have no experience with Fedora, only Ubuntu and never had to configure IPTables, but i found a few howto's on the net.
Hope at least one of them is helpfull.

Good luck.

A. as far as i know wine is what u use for installing software not drivers. you should use ndiswrapper or make sure you're using a distro with the latest stable kernel release... linux seems to be getting better all the time with oob wireless support, you just need to stay updated.
try sabayon 3.5 with kde, very easy to use gentoo based distro with everything installed (including wine and ndiswrapper) and hopefully it will recognize your card with no hassle...

How to put 2moons onto linux ubuntu?
Q. I have a question, i tried to install 2moons onto linux with wine, everything worked untill the end, nothing installed. Is there some other software or a way i have to run it through terminal to make it work?

A. if at all there was any possibility through wine, crossover would have done it. But looks like it doesn't work with crossover (http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?forum=1;app_id=3562;mhl=28643;msg=28625)

So u can try running it in a windows inside Virtualbox. But directX may not work that great.

Am I risking lossing my operating system by booting my laptop with a linux live cd?

Q. I have windows 7 on my laptop and it wont really start up, so im going to recover my data from it by using a linux live cd to boot it up. Is there any risk that ill lose my windows 7 in the process?

A. No. Booting Linux from a CD won't harm your windows (unless you deliberately format your hard drive and install Linux from the CD). It's a good way to recover your data, but you'll still have to fix or re-install Windows.

Can you use PHP and Mysql with a Linux Live CD?

I don't want to install Linux permanently o0n my sustem but I would like to work with the Lice CD without losing my work & setings. Is it possible?

A. Linux LiveCD's are run within the RAM of your PC so you cannot save you settings between LIVE sessions.

One possibility is having Ubuntu installed on a USB Pendrive

Is it safe to watch porn using a Puppy Linux live cd?
Q. For example: boot from the live cd, surf some porn, then shut down the computer and not save the session.

The Puppy Linux live cd already has flash and everything else setup.
I'm talking about normal porn, nothing illegal.

And by safe, I was referring to my computer possibly being infected by viruses and malware.

A. I would image so. First off Linux would not be susceptible to most of the infections that those websites will give you, secondly the session would not be saved, meaning that if you do get something it will be erased when you shut down the system.

You are a clever one.

what does the gnu require software developers to do when modifying linux version?

Q. What does the GNU General Public License require software developers to do when modifying Linux version?
distribute? Huh? I'm an idiot when it comes to this stuff can someone elaborate for me please... I have a 6 page paper and 4 midterms to study for. Help me out pa pa pa please!

A. The GNU License only requires that you license your modified work under the same GNU license. This is known as attribution. Beyond that you have no other legal obligations. As for distributing your work, I have two suggestions for you.
1. Google Code ( http://code.google.com )
2. Source Forge ( http://www.sourceforge.net )
Both are great for getting your project out there.

A. In most cases there is a Linux version or an open source alternative

YAHOO MESSENGER

Q. I know that, there is linux softwares for ipod and a lot of hacking that is really usefull but, i need to know what is language used to make a regular program to ipod. Like if I'm going to program a website I can use PHP or ASP, or if I'll program to windows I can use visual Basic or C++. Thanks!

A. Most projects in Linux are done in C especially if its related to the OS. Only recently has C++ become part of the OS.

iPodLinux creates it own operating system and stores it on the iPod. It would very likely be written in C.

How do i switch web browsers if im using linux?
Q. My browser is currently bing (its horrible) But i don't know how to switch it i checked tools for internet options but its not there im currently using the latest linux Software.

A. As stated directly above me, Bing is not a browser, it's a search engine. To change that, you would need into the about:config in firefox and change the search engine, you can find tutorials through google(Which I recommend). As for browsers, I assume you are using Ubuntu. If so, simply "apt-get install browserpackagename" Replacing browserpackagename with the package name of the browser, of course. You may need sudo to do so, if not, go root with "sudo -i", I believe. To uninstall a browser do the same, except "apt-get remove"

How to turn my usb key into a network key

Q. I would like to boot linux from a live usb but my BIOS dose not support boot from usb. I was worndering if I got a USB to RJ-45 adapter would my usb key show up as a network drive in my BIOS

A. IBM developerWorks has published a detailed technical article on booting Linux from external FireWire or USB drives, in conjunction with a boot floppy, USB storage device, internal drive partition, or another device recognized by the system BIOS. The article also explains basic bootloader concepts that may interest embedded Linux developers.

Is thumb-drive-based Fedora slower than said operating system installed to a hard disk?
Q. I've finally convinced my father to let me install a Linux distribution.
The only catch? It has to be on my USB drive. So, I'm going to install Fedora Live USB.

Will there be any differences in speed compared to hard-drive located Fedora? I don't want to have a bad impression of the operating system.

A. A RAM-based drive (which is a thumb drive) is actually faster than a hard drive, which is why Vista allows you to use one as a disk cache - to speed up disk access.

The difference will be speed - you'll gain it. (But a thumb drive has a limited number of writes, which is why that's only a temporary solution. You'll kill the thumb drive in a year, or a few years. An SD card may be a lot cheaper for the same size - if your computer has a card reader.)

How do I recover a fried hard drive?
Q. I just bought a new laptop. It crashed a few weeks ago. Now it crashed again, and the hard drive is fried. Warranty from Dell is expired. I didn't have any important files on there, and I am saving up for a new hard drive. Anything I can do instead of replacing the fried hard drive? I am posting this from a Linux Live CD. Hope you ca help! Thanks!

A. Hard to say for sure since you don't say anything about how it crashed or how the drive is 'fried'..
Pull the drive out of the laptop. Connect it to another PC (possibly with a USB adapter) and delete the partitions. Put the drive back in your laptop. Boot from a windows CD and re-install windows.

When they start giving away thousands of linux-based educational laptops this fall, will things change much?

Q. Visit http://laptops.org to find out about the machines that will soon be flooding the globe...and the tons of free software being developed, with networking collaboration built-in.
Those who want first-rate creativity software without paying a ransom to Adobe -- and without stealing -- will soon be able to have it all by switching to Linux.
OOPS....that should be http://laptop.org.
and here's a great photo:
http://wiki.laptop.org/images/e/e9/Drawing75c.jpg

A. Not really as there is still a lot of stuff that doesn't work with Linux although I commend the Linux Foundation for doing this.
Unfortunately Windows still rules but Apple is making a big impact in education circles.

What does original Linux look like?
Q. Run the very original line of code that is Linux, then screen shot it so I can see its GUI. I would love to see it. I believe you can get it from the Linux foundation website.

A. The original line (do you mean the first line?) of Linux is not a GUI. Perhaps you do not know what GUI means. Perhaps you could give an example of what you mean.

What is the difference between GNU and GUI?
Q. I have no clue what GNU is but I know gui is Graphic User Interface. GUI is in like mac windows while GNU is in linux/ubuntu, basically any unix system.

A. GNU is the name of software or software collections release by the Free Software Foundation. Originally a recursive acromyn (hackers are quite fond of recursive acronyms) that means GNU is Not Unix.

GNU's GUI is GNOME (GNu Object Model Enviroment), other GUI's for linux are KDE, or XFCE and are not GNU.

GNU really underlies the core system, the compiler, utilities, and many of the tools.

What Ubuntu linux friendly scanner do I need?

Q. I am pondering and searching for a scanner which will be beneficial for hand drawn animation.

I need it to... :

be compatible with linux

be quick

great for scanning a lot of drawings

NOT distort or alter the quality of my drawings as I want to put the drawings into finished animation.

I am basically looking for a scanner which will work for my operating system; Ubuntu Linux, and give me the professional quality which you see with television aired 2d animation shows.

A. Well, I'm not exactly the expert on scanners, but what I've been using is an all-in-one HP Photosmart. I know the scanner is probably pretty junky, although good for my purposes, but the way it works for me is an SD card thing. Ubuntu (linux) can't directly scan like Windows does (or I haven't tried), but it recognizes the SD card by USB. So I suggest getting a scanner that has a usb card.

Anyway, the printer/copier/scanner I use is a HP Photosmart C4680, in case you are interested in it. I use HPLIP to print with Linux.

How do I install Ubuntu Linux to my PC when I have two Hard Drives and don't need to partition?
Q. I've been looking at the Ubuntu Linux site for a while, they tell you how to partition a drive, but not how to set it up for two HD's with a choice of which to boot on startup.

I know I could have the BIOS always pop up on powerup, but is there an easier way?

A. It still need to partition the drive used for Ubuntu.
Actually if you have something on the other drive like Windows, the Ubuntu will put it in the Grub boot Menu. I have XP on one drive and Ubuntu on the other on one of my computers. One word of advise, Windows doesn't play well with others, it will overwrite Grub on other drive without a second thought. So if you reinstall/install Windows unplug the Ubuntu drive during install. If your starting out from scratch install Windows first then Ubuntu, it will save the step of editing /etc/grub/menu.lst to add Windows boot item.

How can I recover deleted pictures and videos from Ubuntu/Linux if I update my computer to Windows 7?
Q. I had Ubuntu/Linux program and change from Ubuntu to Windows, but i didn't save the files, and i want to recover the videos and pictures i had in Linux, how can i recover those files if now i have Windows (i still have the same computer)??????

A. Try PhotoRec of the eight listed freeware solutions in the following link (PhotoRec works in Ubuntu, Windows, Mac, ot just about any other OS):
http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/recovering-those-accidentally-lost.html

How do I upload a folder recursively via SSH through a linux terminal?

Q. The problem is quite simple actually. I have a folder in my desktop which I want to be able to upload to my server via SSH. I want to be able to do that using only the linux terminal. Thanks
I don't know about import/export functions. I just want to upload via SSH. I know it's possible, I just don't know how.

A. See the SCP command (syntax in source link). It copies files over ssh. As you can see, it has an option to put an entire folder over at once.

Alternatively, there's SFTP (secure-ftp) which tunnels a ftp connection through ssh (valid only if the target server also has ftp service in addition to ssh).

How do I transfer files to and from my computer I'm remotely connected to through SSH?
Q. I want to be able to transfer files to and from my home computer remotely while accessing it from an SSH connection...How do I do this? Do I need to set up an FTP server on my home computer? It's running Debian Linux and I access it from my Android phone using ConnectBot.

A. If it's running an ssh server that will include scp and usually sftp.
You can connect with any scp/sftp client like winscp, rsync. If you set up SSH keys access you need not bother with passwords (though it's still a good idea to have some passphrase in case you lose the phone)

ftp is less secure, unless you use SSL

I am accessing my home linux box remotely from work. How can I copy files from that linux comp to my local com
Q. I am accessing my home linux computer remotely from my MacBook via SSH. I am behind a NAT, so I don't have a static IP. I want to retrieve some files from that linux box to my MacBook. Is there a reverse SCP command that I can use so that I can SCP the file from my home linux box to my MacBook at work through the already established tunnel?

A. You use scp direct (not through the tunnel). It can copy either way. One option is to log in to your Linux box through ssh, then use scp to the Mac from there. you would need the address of the mac, and forwarding set up at its' router. Alternatively use the scp from the mac console to your Linux machine. You must have its' address if you can ssh to it.

What linux distribution do you recommend?

Q. If you want to learn how to adminster Linux systems properly, not simply for use as a Windows replacement?

A. This are the most common distros. I DON'T RECOMMEND ANY OF THIS to learning linux at sysadmin level:
Red hat (or centos or fedora)
Ubuntu (or Mint)
Suse

All those distros are designed to be user friendly and easy.

You need a distro that keeps configuration plain and simple, instead of trying to hide it with a nice gui.
I RECOMMEND YOU:
Arch Linux
Gentoo
linux from scratch

I have used archlinux myself, and I can tell you is really easy to learn AND does not hide any of its configuration using guis.

Archlinux has a GREAT wiki, so, even if you are going to configure all by yourself, you'll have great step-by-step guides.
I don't recommend you archbang or sabayon, since they hide their configuration, and its not what you want (You want to learn!)

And that's it. I'll leave you with this from the arch linux wiki:

Whereas many GNU/Linux distributions attempt to be more user-friendly, Arch Linux has always been, and shall always remain user-centric.
Arch Linux targets and accommodates competent GNU/Linux users by giving them complete control and responsibility over the system.
Arch Linux users fully manage the system on their own. The system itself will offer little assistance, except for a simple set of maintenance tools that are designed to perfectly relay the user's commands to the system. Arch developers do not expend energy re-inventing GUI system tools; Arch is founded upon sensible design and excellent documentation.
This user-centric design necessarily implies a certain "do-it-yourself" approach to using the Arch distribution. Rather than pursuing assistance or requesting a new feature to be implemented by developers, Arch Linux users have a tendency to solve problems themselves and share the results with the community and development team â a "do first, then ask" philosophy. This is especially true for user-contributed packages found in the Arch User Repository â the official Arch Linux repository for community-maintained packages.

What are the requirements to distribute a linux live iso?
Q. I want to create a custom linux iso with a few of my personally developed applications and distribute it online. I know Linux is open source, but does this mean I can legally sell the ISO? Are some distros better suited for this than others?

A. Some distros are better suited. Some already have live-cd systems prebuilt, you simply add applications. Ubuntu, Slax, and Gentoo are common live distros.

You can sell the ISO, as long as you don't violate any licenses. Most licenses are GPLs, Creative Commons, or BSDs. You have to comply with the terms of each license, including distribution and availability of source code.

What is the best type of linux for a beginning programmer?
Q. I just started software developing at ASU and my teacher recommends using linux over windows but I've seen all different formats and i don't know which one is the best to start off with i would be dual booting with vista 64 bit

A. For developing I would go with one of the technical distributions such as slackware or gentoo. The only thing is they are not only very UNIX-like, they are tough to wrap your brain around generally. Mark Shuttleworth, who started Ubuntu, got his start on Slackware.

Generally I would go with one with a KDE desktop. XFCE4 is nice -- that's my preferred desktop -- however KDE has a LOT tools which make programming easier. And slackware of course offers KDE and XFCE4 as its default desktops. It does not offer GNOME.

The downside of Ubuntu and its derivatives is that one of the innovations of Ubuntu is precisely that it does not offer easy access to the GNU tools, including GCC and make and gdb -- the debugger. You have to go to synaptic or open a terminal and type "sudo apt-get build-essential".

The technical linuxes, Debian, Slackware, Fedora, Gentoo -- or Linux from Scratch -- demand that you get comfortable with the command line. Nevertheless, even for a beginning programmer, I would precisely say that those are the best type of Linux -- or let's face it, GNU/Linux -- for a beginning programmer.

Also, Debian and Fedora have live CDs available, while you can get A taste of Slackware (though they don't say so) using dyne:bolic ( http://www.dynebolic.org ) or slax ( http://www.slax.org ) both of which are live cds. Therefore you can try them without installing them on your hard drive yet at all -- highly recommended.

How can I install and replace the new Ubuntu Linux?

Q. Hello everyone !
I have Ubuntu Linux version 9.04 installed in one partition of my laptop. There's a newer better version that has just been released (10.04) And I want to install it, but at the same time replace the old one completely with the new installation.
What is the best way to do this ? The way that it's less error-prone, or the easiest way.

Note. I have Windows installed as well and I use GRUB for dual booting.

A. Ubuntu 10.04 at present is unstable

For the time being I would suggest staying with Ubuntu 9.04 or perhaps an upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10 both of which are fine releases

They use mainly XP, but some vista, and maybe a 7, but all windows. Some of them can run the games, and there are ways of playing them on linux (wine), so i see no problem with switching, and i am at least mildly compitent with computers. Any thought to convince/deter me, or any ideas on a specific os (ubuntu, mint...)

A. Yes, but it won't improve performance. Unless the game uses and openGL renderer, expect 1/3-1/2 FPS's under WINE.

There is out there a thing called Tiny XP which is XP minus everything you don't need for most games. Illegal if you just download the .iso and install it, but legal if you use your CD, rip it, modify it with special tools, burn it, and install with your own windows key. Something like that or just a fresh install would give you performance as good as your going to get for windows games.

How to install msn instant messenger onto ubuntu?
Q. I just recently got ubuntu and i am having problems installing and downloading files, Does anyone have any clue how to download MSN messenger on ubuntu? When i try the regular way it says i dont have the right stuff to do it, i have hear about doing it using linux wine. but i dont know how to do that, helP!!!!

A. Hey there!

The problem is, Windows Live Messenger doesn't work proporly in Wine yet, So you have two options.

1) Use Pidgin, It's MSN and it comes with Ubuntu! To get to it go to Applications, Internet, Pidgin Instant Messenger and follow the instructions

2) You can get aMSN, It's more MSN Like and supports Webcam. You can install it by Clicking Applications, Accessories, Terminal and copying and pasting the following in:

gksu apt-get install amsn

Then pressing enter. When you are back at the command line (After all the text has finished flashing up), Close your terminal and go to Applications, Internet, aMSN.

Hope I helped! Ubuntu 4eva!

How do I establish a linux operatings system that would be similar to windows?

Q. Linux is free right. So if I have to buy a new hardrive, I won't need windows which is expensive. But how do I know which I should use. There seems to be many different linux operating system.

A. There are many flavours so you need to decide what you want to do with it (use it as a server, as a desktop etc). There are distributions who offer Live CD's. You boot up from a Live CD and are able to test that particular distribution without actually having to install it until you decide it's good for you.

Search on the net for tips about choosing a linux distribution.
http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Choosing_a_Linux_distribution

Ubuntu should be good for a beginner.

How can I start Linux and what distribution do you think I should use?
Q. I want to use Linux because I have heard that it is significantly better than IE. My entire family is technologically inept and we only have one computer. How do you think I should start and what distribution do you recommend for a beginner who plans on programming and the like?Any helpful suggestions will be appreciated.

A. I thoroughly recommend two Linux distros.

Linux Mint 9 Main Edition which is based upon Ubuntu 10.04

Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) which is based upon Debian Lenny/Squeeze

Both are easy to install and use plus they come with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

HowTo install Nvidia Graphics Drivers on Debian
http://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers#Installapre-builtmodule

Alternatively install Linux Mint as a dual-boot with Windows using mint4win without partitioning mint4win works the same as Wubi as described below (not available on Linux Mint Debian)
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/wubi

You keep Windows as it is, mint4win only adds an extra option to boot into Linux Mint. mint4win does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

mint4win keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the Linux Mint LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the mint4win installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Linux Mint (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Linux Mint is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Linux Mint

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 9 or Linux Mint Debian then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD/DVD for installation

Linux Mint 9 and Linux Mint Debian can also be run direct from the LiveCD/DVD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

How can I remove Linux from my computer and restore the partition space to windows?
Q. I have both Linux Mint 11 and windows 7 on my computer and I no longer want it on my computer so... ya, pretty much says it all in the title.

A. (NOTE: A page titled "How to uninstall Fedora" was added to the project wiki after this blog was published, as noted in the comment section below in a post titled "Contribution is easy.")

Try "remove Fedora."

Nothing.

Go to Ubuntu's official documentation site and search for "uninstall Ubuntu."

You won't find anything in the "official" documentation but in the "community" section you find two entries that state "Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu...."

In an installed Ubuntu distribution, clicking on Help and searching for uninstalling or removing Ubuntu finds nothing. A link ârepeat the search online at the Ubuntu help pagesâ brings up a 404 â page not found.

If you look hard enough on the real community support pages you'll find a post from July 2007 titled "HowTo: Remove Ubuntu (& Restore Windows)" .

Have a cow
The post starts out: "Okay, I know some people are going to have a cow because I'm posting this."

(No kidding. Just take a look at the excoriating flames that are sure to appear in the comments section of this blog.)

OpenSUSE does better. A search there finds the page titled SDB:How to Uninstall Linux from December 2006. The page includes more than 1,300 words to describe various processes.

Go to Google and search "install Linux" and you get about 1,450,000 hits. Try "uninstall Linux" and you get about 16,800. "Remove Linux" gets you about 53,300.

Why is it so hard to find instructions to remove Linux and then so hard to actually do it?

Why can't you just easily find the uninstall procedure in a help file, and click a button and follow the instructions?

Windows makes it easy
Opening the Windows XP Help and Support Center and searching for "uninstall Windows" brings up, first thing, "Uninstall Windows XP" and a 5-step process from the Control Center.

Did you know that in a dual-boot install Linux will partition your hard disk and if you remove the partitions without restoring the Master Boot Record on your boot-up disk, your computer won't start?

Did you know you'll likely need separate applications such as fixmbr or fdisk or partitioning software to get your system back the way it was, hopefully having not lost any data? Or you may need to change a BIOS setting to boot to a Windows CD and use its "Recovery Console?" These all depend on your version of Linux. Again, openSUSE seems to do the best job in automating the process, with the "YaST2 Control Center."

Oh, and if that dual installation included Windows, and partitions were resized, "Microsoft does not support Windows installed on partitions manipulated in this manner."

So it's just you and that Linux documentation. Good luck.

Now, I don't have any great love for Windows and I like Linux. I really do. I'm going to use it and learn a lot more about it.

But if you're a newbie like me, you'd best be warned. Searching various Linux forums finds a lot of users who have had problems uninstalling the OS and have lost data in the process.

Go back to Windoze? You're stupid
And while there are some helpful Linux aficionados who try to help these people out -- and others searching for uninstall help -- there are too many posters who take the attitude along the lines of: "Why would you want to uninstall Linux? That's crazy. You must be stupid to want to go back to Windoze."

If you want to try Linux out while keeping Windows, it's a real good idea to try it from a "live" Linux CD/DVD instead of installing it on a hard disk. Iâve tried several. The response is slower, of course, but you get an idea of how it works and donât risk losing anything. For Ubuntu the Wubi installer accomplishes the same thing by treating Ubuntu as a Windows application.

Do your homework
If you do install Linux on a disk, make sure you do a full system backup. And make sure you have a bootable "rescue" or "system" CD. And really do your homework. Read up on disk partitioning and logical volumes and extended partitions and mounts; and GRUB and LILO bootloaders; and NTFS, FAT 32 and ext3 file systems; and gparted and maybe the commercial app Partition Magic -- which supposedly merges/resizes partitions without destroying data -- and so on.

Then read it all again. And be careful our there.

Q. I deleted my history on google chrome and I turned off the the suggestions on the url bar but the website that I tried to delete is still there, but it has a clock next to the url instead of an earth. How do I delete the url search history?

A. A. Disable the prediction service
--------------------------------------â¦
When you type in the address bar, Google Chrome can use a prediction service to help you complete the web addresses and search terms that you're entering The prediction service is typically turned on by default. http://support.google.com/chrome/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=95656

1. Click the wrench icon on the browser toolbar.
2. Select Options (Preferences on Mac and Linux).
3. Click the Under the Hood tab.
4. In the "Privacy" section, deselect the "Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar" checkbox.

B. Pause your Web History (When you're signed in to a Google Account)
--------------------------------------â¦
If you're signed in to your Google Account and have Web History enabled, the algorithm may show some predicted queries based on searches that you've done in the past. http://support.google.com/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=54057

1. Go to google.com/history.
2. Click Pause to prevent your future web activity from being saved in Web History and from being used to personalize your search results.

C. Clear browsing history

What distro of linux is best for my computer?
Q. I just bought a pc of of ebay. Its an HP DC5700 running at 1.86ghz with an intel core 2 duo proccessor. and 1 gb of ram. I really want an easy to use distro of linux thats light, and easy to use. And that will use both cores in the computer. Could someone please give me some suggestions, ima kinda new to this linux stuff.

A. I recommend you to "Puppy Linux". It is an amazing distribution for older machines.

There are over three hundred Linux distributions that you can choose from. The choices can be overwhelming. There is no agreement as to what is the best linux distro. We know that Linux Ubuntu is the most popular on the desktop and Red Hat Enterprise Linux is the most popular in enterprise settings. But popularity does not equal best fit.

So what is the best linux distro? It depends on your needs and what you are looking for.

1. For newbies:

If you are new to Linux, I suggest you use Linux Mint or PCLinux. These are the most user friendly distributions.

2. Everyday Linux:

If you are looking for a distro that is going to be around a while and is relatively easy to use, then I suggest Fedora or Ubuntu. Fedora is based by Red Hat and Ubuntu is backed by Canonical.

3. Light and fast:

If you have an older system Puppy Linux is the choice for you. It is an amazing distribution for older machines.

4. Server:

CentOS is simply an unbranded and free version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Debian is also an excellent choice, being well known for its stability.

5. Music Production:

Ubuntu Studio is the most popular music and recording solution out there.

6. Multimedia :

If you are interested in turning your computer into a multimedia station, Mythbuntu is the distro for you. The learning curve is a little high, but worth it.

7. Power User:

If you really want to learn Linux, then Gentoo or Slackware is the way to go. Slackware just happens to be the oldest Linux distribution still in active development.

8. Netbooks:

If you are think of using Linux on a netbook, EasyPeasy or Jolicloud are both good choices.

9. KDE Desktop:

For those who like the KDE desktop enviroment OpenSUSE or Kubuntu are probably the best.

10. Kids:

If you have kids the best option for them is Edubuntu.

Hope you"ll get idea which linux distro is best for your PC.

What is the best version of Linux for programmers?
Q. Hi, I'm a programmer and I'm currently using Ubuntu as my main OS which I want. I looking for the best version of Linux or any other type of free OS that is good for a programmer. Ubuntu is the most user friendly version of Linux but I want a OS that is good for a programmer. Anyone have any suggestions?

A. I'm not too sure, I think that all GNU/Linux distros are a good choice, you may want to go with one that is very stable such as, CentOS (Red Hat Enterprise Linux), Debian, or Slackware. You may even want to try Gentoo (or Sabayon Linux which is a user friendly Gentoo) which you need to know how your computer components work to set it up properly.

What would it take to make you change from Windows to Linux?

Q. Personally I would switch tomorrow if all of the software I used was compatible with Linux.

I hope that with the average person coming out of school being more computer savy these days we will see more and more software developers releasing Linux versions.
I have tried Linux in the past and wasn't very fond of it, at that time I was not aware of all the different types available such as Red Hat and Ubuntu. There are versions out there easy to get to grips with and similar to Windows.

A. A direct port of Microsoft Office not a watered down version like they made for Mac. I have tried open office I don't like it.

More automation, I would like to be abe to double click an install file and have it install - I hate hate HATE using the Linux command terminal it is like pulling teeth.

A better IM client I think kMess and GAIM are crap - and a better music player I don't like amarok and WinAmp style media players I just don't like them and I won't 'get used to them over time'.

Did I mention how much I hate using the terminal?

Better games, Linux supports OpenGL and has tonnes of C++ compilers etc, there really is no excuse for not having better games.

Faster boot times, every version of Linux I have tried took ages to boot and my PC isn't exactly low spec, its got a Core 2 Duo @ 1.83ghz with 2 gigs of RAM it shouldn't take so long to boot.

And finally I really like to nosey around and change things when I muck up Windows its easy to restore, Linux isn't I want better recovery options for when theings do go wong because the always do.

I don't ask for much really.

On a unix-like system, how can I set the file permissions of a file to the current default permissions?
Q. Let us suppose I have a file set to the permissions -rwxr----- but the default on the system is -rwx-r-xr-x and insead of using the typical chmod command typing chmod 755 fileName, could I just type a command that sets it to the current default? I am using Ubuntu 12.04 but it would be much appreciated if it worked on mac and other linux versions as well.

A. There is no system default. However, there may will be a default set when you login. It is possible to derive the chmod value from the umask, but be aware that the umask is inverted:

$ umask
0022
$ touch ttt ; ls -l ttt
-rw-r--r-- 1 chris chris 0 Sep 14 23:37 ttt

Here's a tip. If you want to set permissions to rwx-r-xr-x, then don't bother trying to convert that to octal, just use the symbolic setting: chmod u=rwx,g=rx,o=rx fileName. Similar bits on the LHS can be merged, thus giving u=rwx,go=rx.

Don't use the x (execute) bit for files unless they really are supposed to be executable. u=rw,go=r is quite sufficient.

why is the UK version of yahoo home page defaulting to mobile in Linux versions of chrome?
Q. I'm using Ubuntu both i386 and 64bit and the latest version of chrome downloaded from Google its happening on several machines I'm using. Is there some kind of global account setting that would do this?

A. Does it happen when you are logged out or only when logged in?

Have you tried clearing your cache?

If it happens only when you login, it is an account setting.

If it goes away after clearing your cache, you may have visited a link to the mobile site and a cookie got set for it.

If it is happening when you are logged out and you have cleared your cache, it is probably related to your user agent.

You could use the following command to change your user agent to that of an IE9 browser:

google-chrome --user-agent="Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 9.0; Windows NT 6.1; Trident/5.0)"

If this fixes it, which it should, you would want to check your current user-agent and see if there is anything weird about it. Changing your user agent should only be a temporary solution, it can cause problems long term.

How do I run multiple IP address on my linux server?

Q. I just picked up a Dual Xeon server I plan on running linux and cpanel on. I want to run 5 separate IP address which is what my cable modem supports. How do I run 5 IPs on one network card? How do I make them appear on WHM and Cpanel?

A. Linux is great for that, you just add the IP's to the Nic setup!
Don't know what version of linux you have but usually you can run the network scripts to add the IP's. (As long as they are all in the same class range / subnet you are golden.)
Here is a good article with step by step.
http://linux-journal.blogspot.com/2005/04/linux-multiple-ips-single-computer.html

I don't run Cpanel anymore (tried it once) but you should be able to do it from there as well.
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/08/06/how-to-add-ip-addresses-to-server-with-cpanel-webhost-manager-whm/

All these do is tell the card to accept traffic for the IP's you enter. All the rest is handled by apache, ftp etc.

My high school sister wants to major in business and wants to learn how to "do" Linux?
Q. I assume she's talking about Linux and Unix in servers, and not the user friendly distros like PCLinuxOS and Ubuntu, right? She's passionate and determined to learn. Where's a good place to get her started?

A. I would suggest learning how to program in C(Unix's language) because she is so determined and understanding C really helps understanding Unix. Then learn how to do some shell scripting and such.

The best thing for this would be to use the gentoo(http://www.gentoo.org) distro. You need a fast computer for this though because you're making all you're software from pure sources. If you have an okay computer(<1GHz CPU and <1GB of Ram) then it might be a little slow to install things. For this I recommend debian(http://www.debian.org/). Both have excellent documentation.

Also subscribing to a linux magazine is a good idea too. They are a bit expensive so if you can't afford it, I would suggest reading it at your local Barnes and Nobles or other bookstore.

The popular ones are Linux Journal(http://www.linuxjournal.com/) and Linux Format(http://www.linuxformat.co.uk/).

I learned UNIX and linux in like elementary school and I did this by basically trying to program new things. I think trial and error is the absolute best way.

here is a good tutorial: http://freeengineer.org/learnUNIXin10minutes.html

I hope you're successful and if you have ANY questions email me at iammisc@gmail.com.

What is the best Linux Magazine and/or book for beginners to linux?
Q. I just recently moved from windows xp to LInux and I would like to know how to fix dual boot problems. I learned a few things about the command line but I want to learn a lot more. I also need to know how to download and upgrade software like Adobe flash player and other programs. In other words I need a really good book or magazine that will help me get started. I would of course prefer something simple and fast.

A. Linux Journal

http://www.linuxjournal.com/

is the original Linux Magazine. Well, not the original but the oldest still running and widely regarded as the most authoritative.

Linux Format is the most expensive, about $15 here in New Hampshire. Nevertheless it almost always comes with an install or live CD or DVD and the articles are always of excellent quality. I strongly recommend picking up as many issues as you can afford:

http://www.linuxformat.co.uk/

Anything from O'Reilly Press is also well worth the money.

http://oreilly.com/linux/

Also there are forums, like th Ubuntu Forums (go to Ubuntu.com and look for them on the bar on the left) or the forums at http://www.linuxquestions.org ). There are also the Usenet groups which remain lively years after most have become moribund. comp.os.linux heirarchy is subscribable to via google groups. Oh, and many of the developers contribute to the last. Some of them contribute to Ubuntu forums too but Ubuntu assembles their OS out of packages from many sources so very few people work for them and those that don't you are more likely to run into on Usenet.

what is your insight about Linux file system?

Q. what can you say about linux file system compared to windows'?

How do you determine what Linux file system your using?
Q. When you log onto a Linux system and get to the command prompt, how can you determine which of the many file systems supported in Linux you are using? Is there a command that will identify it?

A. Use fsck with the N option which just show what would have been done, but also show you what type of filesystem it is.

fsck -N /dev/(device-name)

e.g.

fsck -N /dev/hdc2

The 'mount' command wont help if the filesystem isn't mounted, and looking in /etc/fstab wont help because you cant be sure that information can be trusted.
