How do I configure internet to work with linux?

Q. I recently installed Red Hat Linux and I discovered that the internet doesn't work (even though I have mozilla and co.). I was told that it might need a configuration, how am I supposed to do that?

A. We need a lot more info in order to help you.
How do you want to connect to the internet: dialup, wired ethernet, wireless?
Which card do you have for connecting to the internet; brand and model?
Which version of red hat?
Have you checked all the menu items looking for an entry that would enable internet connection?
Good luck

Does MCA fresher with linux certification start out as technical support?
Q. I am doing MCA and plan to complete Red Hat Linux certification (RHCE) and CCNA. After completing my MCA will I have to start out as technical support engineer/service engineer/desktop engineer? Isn't there a chance that I will languish in these roles as these aren't high profile roles.

A. Certs are great, but experience is what really impresses an interviewer. If you have very little or no work experience, you are likely to start out in some sort of support role.

This actually makes sense for the employer. Why would they let you make design decisions before you've proven yourself? It's especially important to them, considering you aren't familiar with their network.

Don't worry about it, though. If you're eager to learn and willing to take on responsibility, you will be noticed. Bosses do pay attention to who does what, although they also have to balance the personality of their team members. If the new young hot-shot gets promoted within a week of joining the company, or is hired into a very cherry position, it could easily anger the rest of the team that has been there for years. For that reason, sometimes the new hire is forced to spend some time in a more junior role. This lets the team see what he's capable of.

Q. Best institute for Red Hat Linux training in South Delhi?
Please give me few selected names which are the best one in training. I have list of Linux training institute in Delhi.

A. Netlabs ITS is the best.
There are learned teachers that makes this institution best among others.

How much can learning Linux help with an understanding of PC hardware?

Q. I'm a good technician, but I'm pretty average when it comes to my knowledge of hardware. I'm looking to kill two birds with one stone by learning Linux.

A. Having Linux as your OS does not help with understanding hardware.

I've been building Intel x86 based systems since 1987 and using linux since 1992 in the Yggdrasil days, while you may have to understand hardware to some degree when installing the Linux OS it's not a pre-requisite as much.

Linux has a stronger network based connection to the hardware then does Microslop or Frapple. In order to understand the complexities of many of the features of Un*x based system you have to know networking essentials. Specifically TCP/IP networking.
Most of the applications served up on Un*x are based in the TCP/IP suite of protocols. Except GIMP, Open Office or emacs or vi.
In the darkages when I was using DOS 3.0 writing batch files was pretty much a normal daily activity, now I spend my days in a vi screen writing shell scripts, sql statements or php scripts.

The way to learn is to do.

How long does it take to learn LINUX?
Q. How long does it take to learn linux?
Choosing between Linux & Sql Server 2005?
Choosing between Linux and Sql server 2005??
IT jobs require 3 years of experience so how do I get in??
I am between 2 choices:
Either learning Linux and try to learn as much as i can home but it might take me 2 years to be good and marketable.
Maybe less what do you guys think?

I am also considering learn SQL Server 2005 to become an assistant DBA.

But even if I have lab to practice both jobs positions
require 3 years of experience.

So my question is job wise what do you recommend me to learn ? Linux or SQL Server 2005?

And if the requirement are 3 years of experience how do I get into the field?

I am 49 so I need to get myself established soon.

Thanks.
I have no IT experience.

A. Can you try a little of both to see which you prefer? Linux is a free download. Get yourself 5 CD's, download and install Fedora and play around with it. Even if that takes you 3 days, that's a small investment to help you decide if you want to spend the next 3 years doing it for a living.

Or, download cygwin (a free unix shell for Windows) and learn to write a few shell scripts.

I don't know how you would try a little SQL Server, but there might be a free evaluation download. You will probably need a book to help you play around with this.

In summary, you can teach yourself just about any computer technology for the price of a fat book ($60) at Barnes and Noble or Borders and a lot of persistence. Persistence and patience may be the most valuable personality traits for a programmer.

Sure, we all get lazy and sometimes have to do things we don't want to do, but if you are totally unwilling to teach yourself difficult things, then you may never excel in the field. Look into management or some related field instead.

I work for a hosting company I want to learn LINUX?
Q. I work for a hosting company I want to learn LINUX.

Currently I am a chat tech for this hosting company and I want to move up to administrator. So, I also want to learn more how to fix things in cpanel as well, Like database issues, Learn about ssl, Plesk, etc

Please let me know if you have any info regarding this.

A. My suggestion is:

(1) Install a Linux OS (e.g. fedora, CentOS, ubuntu) on your desktop or laptop, learn the Linux admin skills. Most hosting companies use CentOS.
(2) Install those hosting softwares used by hosting companies (e.g. firewall, virtualization software, apache, php, etc..), and learn how to use and configure these softwares.

Good luck!

How can I build a Linux Distro?

Q. I have downloaded the latest stable kernel. How can I make a linux distro from scratch? What do I need?

A. Linux From Scratch (LFS) is a project that provides you with step-by-step instructions for building your own custom Linux system, entirely from source code.
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/

Alternatively, you can easily customize your own Slax linux live right from your browser. If you are new to Linux you probably want to start with something like that.
http://www.slax.org/

Other Linux Distros

I'm making the sqitch to Ubunto, but don't know where to start?
Q. I like the idea of linux security over Windows, so I'm finally making the switch. I know how to download and install it, my only problem is I can't find a beginners guide or a how-to on learning Linux from scratch. Mostly what I can find are how-to's on altering windows based applications to work in Linux, but nothing on a basic starter's guide..

Anyone have any good resources?

A. http://box.net/public/benplaut/dfiles/ubuntu_user_guide_05.11.pdf

What are the requirements to use Linux From Scratch?
Q. Do I need a linux os to run it?
Is there any third party software I need?
Is LFS a programming language?

What can I do to get the code if I were to base it off of Ubuntu?

A. To get started, all you need is a lot of free time. Go to linuxfromscratch.org and start reading the book and follow the instructions. The prerequisites are listed in there. It will also point to the downloads you need. LFS is not a programming language, it is just the book which lists how to install Linux entirely from sources.

Where to start for becoming a linux master?

Q. I have ubuntu 8.10 installed on my macbook and I am familiar with the gui as well as other desktop environments. But, I have no clue how to program, what a source code is, or how to build my own linux distro from scratch. I do know how to install several operating systems, how to partition a hard drive, and how to install hardware. I'd like to be a programmer someday and I want to know where to start. Thanks!
I don't like kde at all.

A. Check this out:
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/

It guides you through building a distro from scratch.

Source code is basically the "recipe" to a program. A compiler converts source code to binary.

KDE wasn't my preferred desktop environment at first either, but as I started using it and discovered how much more configurable it is and found some of it's unique features (that the other DE's don't have), it became my favorite desktop environment.

But if you want to learn more about Linux, try using a distro that doesn't try to emulate Windows. Using slackware has taught me a lot.

What is a good book for learning UNIX and Linux?
Q. I'm a windows person, but have played with Ubuntu before, but I don't know much of anything about it. I would like to learn to program bash/shell code. My end goal is to build my own custom Linux distro, if not through Linux From Scratch at least customize a solid system. Much appreciation!!!!

A. Here is a very basic and complete book on linux.
Good luck

What is the best or easiest Linux to start using LFS on?
Q. I'm starting for the first time to use Linux from Scratch, but it says I have to use it on a 32-bit Linux. Which Linux would be easy to start on?

Any other help about starting to use LFS would help. What is Linux from Script??????????????????

A. Slackware would be a good choice, it includes most (all?) of the tools you'll need to start building your system.

Has Microsoft announced the date that they'll offer free upgrades to the new operating system yet?

Q. I want to buy a Dell for school, but I am waiting to get one so I can get the free operating system upgrade. Also, anyone know when it (whatever they're calling the new system) will come out?

A. If you're talking about the system that will come after Vista, it's called "Windows 7". Microsoft announced that it will be coming out sometime between September and November of this year! (2009)

Where can i get a good free operating system for my 2005 compaq computer?
Q. Its a windows xp and I want to know where I can get a free operating system compatible with a winzdows xp 2005 compaq because I just used Dban (Derik's boot and nuke) to wipe my computers memory where can I find the operating system I need

A. The computer isn't a Windows XP, it's a Compaq. You can get a free operating system at ubuntu.com. If you want Windows XP for free, find someone who has upgraded to Windows Vista or 7, and ask for their old Windows CD. You'll need a registration key, your computer probably has one on a sticker.

How do you put a operating system on a new hard drive?
Q. I was hoping to put a free operating system on my hard drive but how can I without a disk? Is there a way to put it on to a SD card and transfer it?

A. Is the operating system an ISO image?, because then you can transfer it via SD card (or other storage device) and use a program like Daemon tools which basically creates a virtual disc so u can install the operating system like normal.

Q. hey i really want a desktop manager i looked a compiz fusion but it said i needed linux desktop. What Is That???
Also is there a better desktop manger besides compiz???????

I have tried yodm 3d but that didnt work at all.

A. To have Compiz you need to have Linux installed on your Computer

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 8 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 9.10 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled (including Compiz)

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 8 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 8 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

(Install Ubuntu inside Windows XP and Vista)

Installing Ubuntu as a dual-boot with Windows without partitioning
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/wubi

You keep Windows as it is, Wubi only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the Wubi installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Ubuntu (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Ubuntu is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Ubuntu

What is the common place to mount a network drive in linux.?

Q. I have a Ubuntu server that I hope to use to share files to my roommates using Samba. I know I can mount the drive anywhere and then share it but is there a common place that it shold be mounted?

A. With Ubuntu most drives (other than the obvious /, /boot, /home, etc.) are mounted under /media, but it really doesn't matter.

Playstation 3 as a Media Center Extender, how can it read my networked external hard drive?
Q. I use my PS3 as a media extender. However it only reads the pictures, music and movies in my documents in Vista Home Premium. I have a Network attached storage unit with Gigs of music, movies and pictures. How can I get my PS3 to read those files without having them stored locally on my computer. Or even if there is a unit that can do that. Thank you in advanced.

A. There are a couple of things you can do:
* Set up a UPnP (universal plug and play) server on your computer that will be detected by your PS3 (this is what I do)
* Move all those files to a USB Drive then plug that into your PS3 (this will remove the files from your computer but not take up all the space on your PS3, plus you can get cheap USB drives with lots of space (300GB+) now days)
* Look into getting a file server for both your PS3 and Computer. A small Linux box would work best for this and they have models on ThinkGeek.com

Can I use small desktop computer as home server?
Q. I am planning to buy small computer such as Dell OptiPlex 755 USFF, SFF, or DT desktop. I want to use small desktop as server. I want to install Windows Server 2008 OS for network storage, media sharing, and print server at home. I don't know if the Dell OptiPlex 755 can to run as server. Thanks!

A. Why not buy a NAS?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822155020

Pop up to two hard drives into it (sold separately), and it hooks up to the router. You get storage accessible by any networked device in your home, plus printer sharing. There's also the option to use Raid 5, and server quality drives like WD Red.

Lots of different choices for a NAS solution, that's just a cheap one (and the one I have personally).

But yes, you could use a small computer as a server as well. A NAS is just a simpler solution that takes up MUCH less room.

--------

EDIT - Just a quick note. I run a program called Serviio (free) on my desktop and it acts as a go-between (you just choose the NAS drive when setting up Serviio). While I could get things directly off the NAS, Serviio will transcode any file that is unsupported on the fly for me as well as rename/reorganise my files using metadata off the net. Besides, my desktop never gets shut off and I like not having deal with episode names.

If you go with an actual computer, look into using a linux-based XBMC distro. Really easy to setup, great interface and will host all your media files.

How do I run multiple commands on a Unix/Linux system without a GUI?

Q. I have a gentoo linux system with no GUI. I want to compile stuff, and while it's running, execute more stuff at the command line. How can I give it one command, then give it more commands without installing a GUI (running multiple terminals) or using SSH?

A. Try to use screen (if it is installed on your system -- read man 1 screen).

You can
- create a new "window" with Ctrl-A c
- kill a "windows" with Ctrl-A k
- switch between "windows" with Ctrl-A <space> and Ctrl-A <backspace>
- you can detach the screen (run in background -- you can even logout -- your jobs will still run): Ctrl-A d
- reattaching:
$ screen -r

That's only for starters. Read the built-in help: Ctrl-A ? and the manual for more information.

Of course you can work with background jobs too, but it will be a quite demanding task when you are juggling between 4 or 5 jobs.
It gets even more complicated when you're using && and || operators or redirections.

You can send your job to the background with either "&" at the end of the line or just by pressing Ctrl-Z (stop) and the executing "bg" command (check your shells manual)
You can "retrieve" a background job by issuing the fg <jobnr> command.

Example:
- start 2 long running jobs:

$ ./compile &
$ ./update_doc &

The & operator marks the end of line, so you could actually use single line instead:

$ ./compile & ./update_doc &

- check the job list:

$ jobs

[1]- Running ./compile &
[2]+ Running ./update_doc &

$ "foreground" the first job and send it back to background

$ fg %1
Ctrl-Z
$ bg

kill the second job:

$ kill %2
[2]+ Terminated ./update_doc

Believe me -- you'll prefer screen ;-)

Edit:
yet another solution -- if you're an Emacs user -- just start your editor, M-X shell, voila! I know some hard-core Emacs users who actually _never_ leave their editor.

How do i convert files to .psx?
Q. I downloaded some roms for a psx emulator, but it needs files in the .psx extension i guess :/ the game came with a .bin file and a .cue file. How do i make this work?

Oh, I am running Gentoo Linux btw, and using pcsx as the emulator, neither of which should matter too much i dont think.

A. Open up either the .cue or .bin file using your emulator

OR

Use the PSX Emulator called "ePSXe"
http://www.epsxe.com/

Configure it and open up either the .cue or .bin file

What distro of linux works best with world of warcraft? also kde vs gnome which one?
Q. I've tried playing wow on ubuntu through wine, and the graphics are all chopy at low settings. But when I play in windows 7 the graphics are fine? Is there a better distro that will not make the game so choppy? (Like emulate windows drivers) also is arch linux, gentoo, or saybian good for this game or 3d drivers in general?

A. The choice of distro does not really affect performance to that degree; the presence of suitable drivers does. You may wish to try installing the proprietary drivers for the video cards.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI

The choice of KDE or GNOME should not really impact gaming, though you may need to disable Compiz or compositing in KDE temporarily. Arch Linux and Gentoo do not ship proprietary drivers by default. Sabayon does include them, but that is because of a difference in opinion / politics, not technical.

scp files from my school computer to my home computer?

Q. I just purchased an iMac for my home office and I want to copy files from my Linux machine at school to my iMac at home. My iMac is on a wireless router. I open up a terminal and use ssh, but I'm having issues copying files over. I tried scp filename username@home_ip_address:~ but it doesn't work. Any suggestions?

A. on your imac:
scp your_school_account@ \
your_school_machine:/home/juan/filename .
(two lines because Yahoo Answers didn't display it right)

or Charlie Kelly's method:
sftp your_school_account@your_school_machine
get filename

another option is to use a GUI if you prefer:
download Cyberduck, a free FTP client for Macs

How would you go about this linux task?
Q. 1. I must grep through executable scripts, but they don't end in .doc or .exe tag

2. the grep signature will be "rcp" other remote commands so I can change them secure commands like "scp"

Is there any way I could do this in Linux and using Perl?

A. find . -type f -perm /u+x -exec grep -l -w rcp {} \;

Find regular files starting at the current directory which are executable by the owner. When found grep on whole words of "rcp", but display only the file names.

If you really want to replace "rcp" with "scp" in all cases (not recommended because that is too sweeping), then add a sed loop. Something like this:

find . -type f -perm /u+x -exec grep -l -w rcp {} \; | while read NAME; do cat $NAME | sed -e 's/rcp /scp /g' > .tmp.$$ ; mv .tmp.$$ $NAME; done

Be SURE to test that thoroughly before trying that last bit.

How do I turn my Ubuntu/Linux PC into a server for my Windows 7 PC?
Q. Is this a good idea? Will my Windows PC get extra protection since I will be going on the Internet using the Ubuntu as a server, as an intermediary? How difficult is it to do this?

A. This question is pretty poorly designed. There is no "Server for windows" in Linux. You can do several things with linux and connect/use them from windows though. You can make linux a firewall and router, connect it to your cable/dsl modem so you can have multiple computers use your internet connection at one time. You can run web, ftp, and other servers for files and web pages. You can also run Samba which allows you to access and store files on the linux hard driver over the network. linux also makes a GREAT extension to your windows environment using things like xdmcp, rdp, ssh, scp. if you do not know what any of these terms are, google is your buddy. You can also set up a web proxy using linux and this could definitely be used to increase your web browsing security in windows by blocking malicious web sites. Pretty much anything you want to do with Linux is limited by you and your willingness to learn.

Nothing is simple click and go in linux. You have to be willing to experiemnt, read, and learn.

Can Linux Fedora 17 run on an old laptop?

Q. I have a laptop with an Intel Celeron M 1.4 GHz processor and 256 MB of RAM. How well can Linux Fedora 17 run on that? I checked the release notes but could not find anything definitive.

A. Try one of the Fedora spins with a lighter-weight desktop.

How do I maintain my privacy on a Shared Network? I use Linux/Fedora.?
Q. I use someone's network in my home (roomate's) and my system is Linux/Fedora. How do I make sure that someone cannot look and see what sites i'm visiting, my passwords etc? A step by step would help.

A. First, always use secure http for web sites that have accounts (username/password). Your password will be encrypted (usually via openssl). So no one snooping your local home network can see any login passwords. Likewise, always use secure shell (ssh) for shell logins. Same reason.

The IP addresses of the sites you are visiting, however, will be available to anyone snooping your network connection. You might be able to hide those through a proxy service, but unless they encrypt the target IP address (or URL) you can still be tracked by your room mate.

Look into "Tor", for example.

A. I am not sure that it will help or not,but try in any linux OS.First try to delete,if that won't possible, then go for formatting.
You can format the pen drive by using DOS also.

1.Open the DOS prompt (Start >> Run >> cmd)
2.Type:FORMAT X: /FS:FAT32 /Q /V:PenDrive

This will reformat the Pen drive, using the FAT32 file system, and label the drive PenDrive.
3. Replace X: with the actual drive letter of your Pen Drive.
4.For more help on this command, type:

How to keep my pen drive that I use in Ubuntu safe from Windows viruses?
Q. I use Ubuntu on my computer, but none of my friends do. How do I make sure my pen drive doesn't catch a virus on a Windows PC and transmit it to another Windows PC? Is there any way I can see, on my Ubuntu, if the pen drive has Windows viruses in it?

A. Windows viruses won't recognize the Linux programs, or how to attach to them. Even if they did, Linux would not run the virus, as it will not simply run that Windows code...
With ClamAV, you may be able to scan the pen drive.

But before giving back the pen drive to the person, I copied all the files in the pen drive to one of my hard disks, thinking that if ever I need to reinstall linux I will copy these files to my pen drive and that will install linux once again on my system. But that hasn't happened. My pen drive doesn't boot. What's wrong?

A. You need more than just the files. You need to install a bootloader on the disc. Simply dragging the files to and fro is not enough to make it bootable.

How can I start Linux and what distribution do you think I should use?

Q. I want to use Linux because I have heard that it is significantly better than IE. My entire family is technologically inept and we only have one computer. How do you think I should start and what distribution do you recommend for a beginner who plans on programming and the like?Any helpful suggestions will be appreciated.

A. I thoroughly recommend two Linux distros.

Linux Mint 9 Main Edition which is based upon Ubuntu 10.04

Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) which is based upon Debian Lenny/Squeeze

Both are easy to install and use plus they come with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

HowTo install Nvidia Graphics Drivers on Debian
http://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers#Installapre-builtmodule

Alternatively install Linux Mint as a dual-boot with Windows using mint4win without partitioning mint4win works the same as Wubi as described below (not available on Linux Mint Debian)
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/wubi

You keep Windows as it is, mint4win only adds an extra option to boot into Linux Mint. mint4win does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

mint4win keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the Linux Mint LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the mint4win installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Linux Mint (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Linux Mint is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Linux Mint

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 9 or Linux Mint Debian then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD/DVD for installation

Linux Mint 9 and Linux Mint Debian can also be run direct from the LiveCD/DVD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

How can I remove Linux from my computer and restore the partition space to windows?
Q. I have both Linux Mint 11 and windows 7 on my computer and I no longer want it on my computer so... ya, pretty much says it all in the title.

A. (NOTE: A page titled "How to uninstall Fedora" was added to the project wiki after this blog was published, as noted in the comment section below in a post titled "Contribution is easy.")

Try "remove Fedora."

Nothing.

Go to Ubuntu's official documentation site and search for "uninstall Ubuntu."

You won't find anything in the "official" documentation but in the "community" section you find two entries that state "Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu...."

In an installed Ubuntu distribution, clicking on Help and searching for uninstalling or removing Ubuntu finds nothing. A link ârepeat the search online at the Ubuntu help pagesâ brings up a 404 â page not found.

If you look hard enough on the real community support pages you'll find a post from July 2007 titled "HowTo: Remove Ubuntu (& Restore Windows)" .

Have a cow
The post starts out: "Okay, I know some people are going to have a cow because I'm posting this."

(No kidding. Just take a look at the excoriating flames that are sure to appear in the comments section of this blog.)

OpenSUSE does better. A search there finds the page titled SDB:How to Uninstall Linux from December 2006. The page includes more than 1,300 words to describe various processes.

Go to Google and search "install Linux" and you get about 1,450,000 hits. Try "uninstall Linux" and you get about 16,800. "Remove Linux" gets you about 53,300.

Why is it so hard to find instructions to remove Linux and then so hard to actually do it?

Why can't you just easily find the uninstall procedure in a help file, and click a button and follow the instructions?

Windows makes it easy
Opening the Windows XP Help and Support Center and searching for "uninstall Windows" brings up, first thing, "Uninstall Windows XP" and a 5-step process from the Control Center.

Did you know that in a dual-boot install Linux will partition your hard disk and if you remove the partitions without restoring the Master Boot Record on your boot-up disk, your computer won't start?

Did you know you'll likely need separate applications such as fixmbr or fdisk or partitioning software to get your system back the way it was, hopefully having not lost any data? Or you may need to change a BIOS setting to boot to a Windows CD and use its "Recovery Console?" These all depend on your version of Linux. Again, openSUSE seems to do the best job in automating the process, with the "YaST2 Control Center."

Oh, and if that dual installation included Windows, and partitions were resized, "Microsoft does not support Windows installed on partitions manipulated in this manner."

So it's just you and that Linux documentation. Good luck.

Now, I don't have any great love for Windows and I like Linux. I really do. I'm going to use it and learn a lot more about it.

But if you're a newbie like me, you'd best be warned. Searching various Linux forums finds a lot of users who have had problems uninstalling the OS and have lost data in the process.

Go back to Windoze? You're stupid
And while there are some helpful Linux aficionados who try to help these people out -- and others searching for uninstall help -- there are too many posters who take the attitude along the lines of: "Why would you want to uninstall Linux? That's crazy. You must be stupid to want to go back to Windoze."

If you want to try Linux out while keeping Windows, it's a real good idea to try it from a "live" Linux CD/DVD instead of installing it on a hard disk. Iâve tried several. The response is slower, of course, but you get an idea of how it works and donât risk losing anything. For Ubuntu the Wubi installer accomplishes the same thing by treating Ubuntu as a Windows application.

Do your homework
If you do install Linux on a disk, make sure you do a full system backup. And make sure you have a bootable "rescue" or "system" CD. And really do your homework. Read up on disk partitioning and logical volumes and extended partitions and mounts; and GRUB and LILO bootloaders; and NTFS, FAT 32 and ext3 file systems; and gparted and maybe the commercial app Partition Magic -- which supposedly merges/resizes partitions without destroying data -- and so on.

Then read it all again. And be careful our there.

How different is a Linux network compared to a Unix network?
Q. How different is a Linux network compared to a Unix network? I understand a Unix network has mainframes, etc.

What are the things a Unix network has but a Linux network does not have and can never have?

A. Uhm... nooo.... Unix networking has about zero to do with mainframes.

Actually, Unix networking and Linux networking are pretty darned close with little or no exceptions.

Where are you getting your information from? Where ever it is, its bad information. Don't go there any more.

What is the best Linux Magazine and/or book for beginners to linux?

Q. I just recently moved from windows xp to LInux and I would like to know how to fix dual boot problems. I learned a few things about the command line but I want to learn a lot more. I also need to know how to download and upgrade software like Adobe flash player and other programs. In other words I need a really good book or magazine that will help me get started. I would of course prefer something simple and fast.

A. Linux Journal

http://www.linuxjournal.com/

is the original Linux Magazine. Well, not the original but the oldest still running and widely regarded as the most authoritative.

Linux Format is the most expensive, about $15 here in New Hampshire. Nevertheless it almost always comes with an install or live CD or DVD and the articles are always of excellent quality. I strongly recommend picking up as many issues as you can afford:

http://www.linuxformat.co.uk/

Anything from O'Reilly Press is also well worth the money.

http://oreilly.com/linux/

Also there are forums, like th Ubuntu Forums (go to Ubuntu.com and look for them on the bar on the left) or the forums at http://www.linuxquestions.org ). There are also the Usenet groups which remain lively years after most have become moribund. comp.os.linux heirarchy is subscribable to via google groups. Oh, and many of the developers contribute to the last. Some of them contribute to Ubuntu forums too but Ubuntu assembles their OS out of packages from many sources so very few people work for them and those that don't you are more likely to run into on Usenet.

What's the best linux distro for a computer without an internet connection?
Q. Considering only this as a criterion, what's the best linux distribution that comes to mind?

Thanks

A. A distro that comes on a DVD, not a CD (you get more packages that way) and one that has compiled packages, not some thing that you have to build each package from scratch.

Linux Format and Linux Magazine (out of the UK, not the US mag by the same name) both provide DVDs that mean that criteria.

You can get Ubuntu, Mandriva, Suse, and other such distros like that. Just avoid multi-distro DVDs which have smaller, less complete versions since you won't be able to get online to add or upgrade packages.

What is the best magazine for a web developer out there? web designer magazine and .net magazine are expensive?
Q. I want it to have design and programming articles in it. I have looked at .net magazine and web designer magazine but their subscription is expensive. I have also looked at online magazines but I seem to like reading stuff on paper.

A. Have you tried looking at The Magazine Group (www.benbow.org.uk/Magazines.htm). They have quite a few computer magazine subscriptions that look reasonably priced.

eg "Web Designer", "Web User", "Linux Format", "MSDN Magazine".

Hope you find what you are looking for.

How do I turn my PS3 to its normal state from the Linux Boot up?

Q. I have PS3 60 GB, and I have tried to install Linux. And when I have done, then I restarted my PS3. But when I did that, a black linux boot screen showed up instead of the the normal PS3 system. And when i am in that boot screen, it says that i have to install or just try out the Linux. How do get to the normal PS3 system from there?

A. 1. Turn the PS3 off (into standby).
2. Turn it on by holding the PS3's power button for about 5 seconds until you hear a second beep.
3. The PS3 will boot to the XMB OS and go back to default video settings.

Now that you're back in the PS3's XMB you can format the hard drive and remove linux (and its partition) from the hard drive. Back any PS3 game save files up before you do so, because they will all be deleted as well.

How can I change the size of my Ubuntu Linux screen to fit my laptop monitor?
Q. My Ubuntu screen is too small and I don't know how to change the screen size to fit the monitor.

A. System -> Administration -> Monitor

how can i copy text from windows and paste in in linux 'screen' shell?
Q. I want to run my matlab code in linux 'screen' program. and im not sure how to do that. I initiate screen, and then write matlab -nodisplay. so the matlab starts. however, im not sure how can i run my code in it. shal i just copy paste my code in the shell? how?

A. Save your code as a .m file (for example your_code.m)

Copy the .m file into the Linux directory you are launching Matlab from
OR
lanch Matlab and cd into the directory where you put the .m file

Run your code by typing the name of the .m file into Matlab command window. So if your code is called 'your_code.m', ou'd type 'your_code' into Matlab and it will run.

The .m file can be a function with a return value, or it can be a script with just a list of commands.

How to make an Apache Server using Linux?

Q. Hi I am using linux debian on an old imac g3. I have gotten the web server up to a point where I can see the 'It Works' page but now what? I want to add Joomla to it but I don't know how to make it load like cpanel does. Help!

A. a) Download Joomla
[code]
cd /var/www
sudo wget -c http://joomlacode.org/gf/download/frsrelease/14659/64120/Joomla_1.6.3-Stable-Full_Package.zip
sudo unzip Joomla_1.6.3-Stable-Full_Package.zip
sudo rm index.html
sudo chown -R www-data:www-data *
[/code]

b) Setup MySQL & phpmyadmin
[code]
sudo apt-get install mysql-server
sudo wget -c http://iweb.dl.sourceforge.net/project/phpmyadmin/phpMyAdmin/3.3.10/phpMyAdmin-3.3.10-all-languages.tar.gz
sudo tar xvfz phpMy*
sudo mv phpMy* phpmyadmin
sudo chown -R www-data:www-data phpmyadmin
sudo mv phpmyadmin/config.sample.inc.php phpmyadmin/config.inc.php
sudo nano phpmyadmin/config.inc.php
[/code]
During the installation, it will ask you for the mysql password. set it, and remember it.

Now,
At this point, add something to the part where it says you need to add something for blowfish authentication. Just type a whole load of random characters.

Press Control + X to save.

visit http://< web server address >/phpmyadmin

login with username 'root' and the password you set before.

Create a new database named "joomla"

Now, visit http://< web server address >
Your database name is the one you just created.
User is "root"
password is the password that you set.

Its not exactly secure to use the root account, but as your only using it for personal purposes, it doesn't matter much.

Can anyone help me with installing programs on Linux?
Q. I dont have internet on the computer i have linux on, am i screwed or is there still a way?

A. Some software is distributed in "Source form". This means you download a file containing all the source code for the application you want to install, unpack it, and compile it on your system. Compiling is the process of turning the source code into an executable binary. It is a fairly straight forward process.

Typically applications you must compile from source will come as a ".tar.gz", ".tar.bz2", or ".zip" file.

You'll probably want to operate from inside your home directory. If your user is (for example) username, your home directory will be /home/username/. Downloaded your zip file containing install files to /home/username/src. If you do not have a src directory, you can create it with the following "mkdir" (make directory) command:

Code:
mkdir /home/username/src/
So, we have our source package in /home/username/src/.

Change to the /home/username/src/ directory with the "cd" (change directory) command like so:

Code:
cd /home/username/src/
Use the "ls" (list directory contents) command, to see the file is present:

Code:
ls

We now need to unzip the zipped file, this is done differently depending on the file extension.

for files ending in .tar.gz, use:

Code:
tar -zxvf <filename>
(replacing <filename> with the name of the file).

for files ending in .tar.bz2, use:

Code:
tar -jxvf <filename>
for files ending in .zip, use:

Code:
unzip <filename>
You should now have a new directory, containing all of the source files. To confirm it exists, and to get its name, use the "ls" command again.

Code:
ls
we now need to go into the new directory, so use the cd command:

Code:
cd <directory>

This is where things will differ. Some packages will have an INSTALL or README file which will contain installation instructions. use "ls" to see if the software has an install or readme file. If it does have one, you can use the "more" command to read it, like so:

Code:
more INSTALL
Generally, the final 3 stages are as follows:
- Configure the installation
- Compile the software
- Install the binaries

The pre-installation configuration is done by executing ./configure:

Code:
./configure
This will perform some requirements testing on your system, and create a "Makefile" which will explain to the "make" utility how the software should be compiled.

The next stage is to compile the software, this is done using "make". When you run "make" it will read the instructions in the Makefile and build the application binaries.

Code:
make

The final stage is to install these binaries, ie, copy them to a more permanent location. Typically only the "root" user can do this, so you will need to swich to the root user with the "su" command:

Code:
su
Once you are root, install the binaries using the "make" command, followed by "install", like so:

Code:
make install

How can I open a zip file on a Linux OS?

What are some linux video editing softwares?

Q. Hi. I have a 32 bit ubuntu computer. I am an editor, Filmer, Director, and Producer. I recently switched from Windows to Ubuntu. I need a good video editing program. Heres what I'm looking for. A program that you can crop videos and add effects. Thats really it. I used to use Windows Movie Maker. Something similar to that would be GREAT!

Thanks so much for your time!!
When I say effects I mean visual effects.

A. heres a full list of video editing software, just search 4 linux in it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_editing_software
in my opinion, pitivi is the best, go to apt://pitivi/ to install it.

What is the best video editing program for Linux?
Q. I've tried a few, but they're either really complex, or don't work. My computer is Linux, and I was wondering what (free) video editing software works, and is not too complex. I can figure it out normally if its somewhat complex but something that's simple would be great!

A. Hello;

My very favourite video editing program is the Linux program OpenShot. It is quite intuitive, and very powerful. I am using it on Ubuntu. This website will explain the technical issues:

http://www.openshotvideo.com/

I like it much better than Nero, and of course it is an open source progrm. It has cromakey capabilities so I use greenscreen to make my subtitles.

For music editing (I sometime use sound) I use Audacity.

Best of luck,

Bill

what is a good linux OS that was built for video editing and audio editing?

Q. Iv been working with linux for a few years now and im starting to get into video editing and what not... I know about APODIos... I WILL NEVER RUN MAC so dont even bother telling me to get mac

A. Ubuntu Studio which is a multimedia OS version of Ubuntu:
http://ubuntustudio.org/

What is the best computer for video editing, but also same gaming?
Q. I want to buy a computer that will be primarily used for video editing with Adobe Creative Suite 4 Production Premium. However, I also enjoy gaming. I want it to have tons of memory (really really fast performance) and hard-drive (at least 600 GB hard drive). What computer would be best for me and with what specs? Mac or PC? Desktop or Laptop? etc..... thanks for any info you can provide!

A. PC Desktop.. More performance for your money, more support and the following...

PC=Variety of specs, options, quality, prices, vendors, support
Mac=One vendor, limited options, still more expensive. Look below for more information..

Today, Macs use a subset of PC hardware. Why spend extra to get the same CPU chips, graphics cards and OS X isn't as secure as you think..

Don't believe the lies that Macs are better than PCs at graphics/animation.. Dreamworks Animation http://www.dreamworksanimation.com/ under studio click on Technology of Animation, an independent film maker I know uses PCs, a graphic artist I used to know uses PCs also.

A number of PCs can also run OS X (Mac OS) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=os+x+on+pc&btnG=Google+Search&aq=0&oq=os+x+on+ as well just that Apple makes it illegal in order to get Market share.. The reason why Mac can run native Windows is because it is using a subset of PC hardware,

If you decide to buy a Mac for running Windows, you will still have to get the same virus/spyware protection, and run into the same issues as a regular PC.

Now is a Mac worth buying for OS X?

I say: NO... for the following reasons...

ADVANTAGES WINDOWS :
Aprox 90% of the market is Windows and most PCs have windows already pre-installed.
1) Some websites require Internet Explorer, to run IE on Mac you really get ies4osx which is the Windows version of IE running really buggy and illegal if you don't have a legitimate copy of Windows.
2) Supports devices (printers and other things you hook into the computer).
3) More business software/games
4) Want the dock on OS X (Mac)? google/yahoo rocketdock, objectdoc.
5) Used by businesses.

ADVANTAGES LINUX :
1) FREE (most versions are)
2) Install software by eitjher 1) Synaptic Package Manager, 2) Add/Remove 3) Opening a .deb or .rpm file (depending on distribution)
2) Like the Mac OS X effects? go yahoo/google COMPIZ FUSION which can do any cool effect a Mac can do and many ore....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4Fbk52Mk1w
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3gkX9HDfEE (there is no flickering when you use it like on the video, not sure why the person has the flicker)
3) Mac OS X Doc? google/yahoo Avant Window Navigator.Cairo Dock, http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3rf5q_cairo-dock-mac-os-x-leopard-dock-on_tech
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0hzi22g2DE
4) It is FASTERr/MORE SECURE to surf on the internet
5) Some Windows programs work with Wnehq/Crossover (also avail on Mac, but why pay $$$)

VIRUSES
Mac OS X has viruses (and significantly on the rise), a friend of mine has a virused Mac. As more users use Macs, more viruses will come out for it. Especially when users think "they are safe".

QUALITY/PROBLEMS
Contrary to belief, Macs are not better quality. Apple also has been changing suppliers to try to "lower the price" and thus lowering quality. Even with the lower prices, Macs still cost more, they spend a higher percent of budget trying to make it look pretty, and marketing.

Sample of problems: Overheating Macbooks, OS X- not responding to keyboard, some units with 16bit screens, etc. Apple statistics are misleading since Mac users with problem machines are more likely to go out and buy a new computer than PC users. Apple is lowering prices which means you can expect lower quality than in the past. Apple had switched the manufacturers producing parts. OS X also has problems slowing down.

Repairs are more expensive than PCs since the IMac, Mac Mini are compact units, and Apple charges a premium for their services. Some repairs can be done by another repair service but the compact design of the computer causes problems.
With an IMac, if the problem is with the monitor, the whole computer would have to be brought in.
IMac and Mac mini lack expansion.

PRICE
A similar equipped PC is much cheaper to purchase than Mac. Lets use Dell (but you can compare with another PC Brand if you like)

**(LAPTOP)
Dell Inspiron Laptop $849 dropped to $799
15" Screen
CPU: (upgrade to) 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Graphics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
Memory: 3GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Hard Drive: 320GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
Optical Drive: Blu-ray Disc Combo (DVD+/-RW + BD-ROM) - WRITES DVDS,CDS, READS Blue-Ray Disks

Macbook $1349 just dropped to $1224
13" Screen (SMALLER)
CPU: 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (SAME)
Graphics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 (SAME)
Memory: (upgrade to) 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (LESS RAM)
Hard Drive (upgrade to) 250GBSerial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm (SMALLER HARD DRIVE)
Optical Drive: (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) - (Writes CDs, DVDs, cannot read Blue-Ray) (WORSE AND 1/2 SPEED)

**(DESKTOP)

PLEASE NOTE: I compare Apple Mac's vs Dells best deal. If you really want an all-in one the Dell all-in-one has more ram, wireless keyboard and mouse and equivalent to $400 for free making the Imac still more expensive when you matching specs. Personally I don't think the All-in-Ones are a good choice, and consider them overpriced, lack expandability and repairs both more expensive and require the entire computer.

PS: Apple knows that they need to make Macintosh look different than PC so all Macs except the Mac Pro will not have a tower option. Apple's low end lacks expandability but it makes the Mac "look different", if Mac had a tower for low-end, more people would realize the similarities between the two.

Dell: (At The Moment) Specs Below costs $809
CPU: 2.4 GHZ Dell Inspiron QUAD (4 Processor) CORE
SCREEN: 20inch Screen
MEMORY: 3GB Ram
HARD DRIVE: 500 GB hard Drive
OPTICAL DRIVE: 16x DVD/CD Read/Writer
GRAPHICS: (upgrade to ) ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO 128MB

The Mac Mini since it has no monitor, keyboard, mouse, very skimpy on options and setup and is not the best deal... The IMac is better price than the Mac Mini.

IMac ($1400)
CPU: 2.4 GHZ DUAL (2 Processor) CORE (SLOWER CPU)
SCREEN: 20inch Screen
MEMORY: (upgrade to) 2GB Ram (LESS RAM)
HARD DRIVE: (upgrade to ) 500 GB hard Drive
OPTICAL DRIVE: 8x DVD Reader/Writer (1/2 speed)
GRAPHICS: ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO 128MB

What are some good free video editing programs?
Q. Something more or less simple to use, although I understand that video editing software is usually complicated.

A. Here's a roundup of some of the free ones:

Microsoft Live Movie Maker 2011 -- WMM is already installed on computers that are running Windows XP and Vista. But if you have Vista or 7, you can use the latest version:

You may add 3rd party effects that don't come with the WLMM with this:

VirtualDub -- may lack the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. You can take a captured clip, trim the ends, clean up some of the noise, convert it to the proper frame size, and write out a better one. Remove and replace audio tracks without touching the video. It has extensive video filter set, including blur, sharpen, emboss, smooth, 3x3 convolution, flip, resize rotate, brightness/contrast, levels, deinterlace, and threshold.

Avidemux -- a free video editor designed for simple cutting, filtering and encoding tasks. Trim, add filters and even encode video. You can remove the audio portion of a video file, or remove the video portion and retain the audio part, among others. You can even reformat and resize your videos. It's a great and effective free video editing software for those who havenât obtained much, if any, experience in video editing. In addition to powerful scripting within Avidemux, it supports a slew of video file types such as AVI, MPEG files, MP4, ASF and more.

Blender -- a 3D graphics video creation program which hosts a variety of features. These include modeling, animation, rendering, post-production and real-time interactive 3D, as well as game creation. Playback with cross-platform compatibility for Blender is also included along with support for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Zwei-Stein -- a great free video editing software, but the user interface is very technical. It is full featured, offering many different effects. There are up to 64 effects, which can be chained serially.

Wax -- a high performance and flexible free video editing software program, good for both home users and professionals. It can create 2D & 3D special effects and can work in two modes - as a standalone application which would appeal for home users/beginners, and as a "plug-in" to video editors/NLEs which would be more useful for professional editors.
